There is a study that says the average home has around 300k items in it. Yes, 3-0-0 thousand That is a lot. I think thanks to the mass production era and how easily you can find things for cheap is a big reason why. Instead of necessity, we live in a time of excessivity- no that’s not a word, but you get the point.

But when did our homes become a storage locker for things?

Things that kids pick up for 1 second than put down.

Things that get untouched for months.

Things that are hanging out because they bring some sort of comfort and familiarity but serve no real purpose.

And things that you would be ok with if you didn’t have.

The reality is, we would be ok. I think somewhere along the lines I’ve quietly convinced myself I won’t be ok if I get rid of this or that. Maybe there are good reasons to not get rid of certain things but for the most part its just excessive.

There needs to be a balance. And some people can handle a lot more things. Maybe it doesn’t affect their day-to-day cleaning routine, they are able to get things put away quickly without getting stuck and then there are people like me whose mind seems to unravel when I have 20 things I need to do at once and a pile of 20 things that each go in a different part of the house!

And as a mom, our time to clean window can be very short and interrupted frequently throughout the day-There are cleaning schedules, but I think those would be easier followed if there was less stuff to begin with!

I have much to much stuff that I am just holding on too because…. well maybe one day I’ll use it. Or maybe I will need it ONE day.

But never mind the 5,000 OTHER days that it’s not going to be used!

So here we are, in May. And it's time for a declutter sesh.

That piece of décor you kind of hate but it was on sale for $5,

Those Tupperware lids that actually don’t have a match

The 500 items alone in your misc. kitchen drawer

Those clothing items that don’t fit, have a tear, or you just don’t like

And maybe just maybe, you have things around your home that need repairing or painting, but you have not been able to comfortable get to it-now you’ll be able too if you get rid of all the other stuff that just doesn’t matter!

Remember these things are just…things! They don’t have feelings. And you’re going to be ok getting rid of those coffee mugs you got as a gift and have never used it once in the last 3 years.

Here is the challenge:

Every day in May set a goal of how many items you want to get rid of.

There was a challenge where you get rid of the same number of items as the date-

i.e.-May 5th, you get rid of 5 things, May 7th you’d get rid of 7 things, etc.

If you did that you would have gotten rid of 496 things!

I watched That Awkward Mom and got this idea from her!

I am going to challenge myself and try to get rid of 1,000 items which equals to 32 items a day!

So, follow along or join with me throughout this month!

And MAY our homes be decluttered, too cheesy?

xX,

H
